Alberto Nanclares
In the far west of Galicia, facing the Atlantic side, Alberto Nanclares represents one of those figures actively engaged in enhancing the area. The bodega is located near Cambados, a town in the province of Pontevedra, in the Rías Baixas. It all started by chance in 1992 when Alberto, an economist by profession, bought a property with attached vineyards and, shortly thereafter, decided to embark on winemaking with the help of an oenologist. After a few years of experience, Alberto personally took the reins of the entire production process, which he now manages together with Silvia Prieto. As the winemaker himself stated, through his wines he wants to convey the essence of the place and his own spirit. In addition to those in Pontevedra, Alberto manages vineyards in O Saviñao and Ribeiro, respectively in collaboration with Roberto Regal and Avia do Cume.
The Alberto Nanclares winery consists of 5 hectares of vineyards distributed over 14 different parcels, with plants aged between 30 and 100 years.that benefit from the Atlantic oceanic climate, rather humid, rainy, and cool. In this context, Albariño is mainly cultivated according to the principles of organic farming, supplemented by biodynamic practices. Both in the vineyard and in the winery, the path of minimal intervention is followed, and fertilization is carried out with self-produced compost made from exhausted grape pomace and seaweed collected along the Atlantic Ocean. Yields are kept low to allow the grapes to reach perfect ripeness. According to this logic, the practice of green harvesting is adopted, which consists of removing clusters with lower qualitative potential a few weeks before harvest, thus allowing optimal ripening for the rest of the grapes. Harvesting is done by hand, with a rigorous selection of clusters and in a staggered manner, in order to respect the specific ripening of each vineyard. The different parcels are vinified separately and only later blended. Except for moderate doses of sulfur, no additives are used in the winery, and no clarification of the musts is carried out.
The wines of Alberto Nanclares and Silvia Prieto express the saline minerality of their land and the freshness typical of oceanic climates.
