La Cattiva

In Turi, in the province of Bari, an area included in the Primitivo di Gioia del Colle zone, the young Apulian reality La Cattiva is committed to producing authentic and genuine wines, driven by the desire to preserve nature with its delicate balances. Strong in this will, the estate operates according to a sustainable agronomic approach and a non-interventionist enology, also leaving room for experimentation. Everything began almost as a game in 2018, the year a group of friends decided to give new life to the abandoned farmhouse of a friend, Marianna, surrounded by vineyards but without a wine production. After an experimental harvest, in 2019 the group rented the vineyards officially starting the wine project La Cattiva. The curious name comes from the name of the farmhouse itself, which was called so because in the 18th century the structure was owned by a widow, “captiva diaboli” as they were called in the Middle Ages, who according to popular belief remained alone because cursed by the devil.

The La Cattiva estate extends over 7 hectares of vineyards, planted in 2001 and always conducted organically. In fact, from a perspective of authentic sustainability, the use of synthetic chemical products is banned in the vineyard and only low doses of copper and sulfur are used in the defense against phytopathogenic agents. The cultivated varieties, worked entirely by hand, include Primitivo, Negroamaro, Aleatico, Montepulciano, Aglianico, Trebbiano, Malvasia Bianca, and Malvasia Nera, grapevines placed on calcareous and stony soils at an altitude of 280 meters above sea level. In the winery, fermentations occur completely spontaneously mainly in stainless steel tanks, with some wines being worked in terracotta amphorae and wooden barrels, while for bottle refermentations the slight sparkling is carried out according to the Metodo Ancestrale. Throughout the entire processing, the use of sulfites and any other enological additives is excluded.

The wide and varied selection of the Apulian winery La Cattiva includes white wines, rosés, reds, orange, sparkling wines, and frizzante wines with a pure and unconventional character, reflecting the soul of the estate.
