Praesidium

The Praesidium winery is a prominent winery in the landscape of artisanal wines from Abruzzo, capable of enhancing the most authentic characteristics of Montepulciano. Leading this small reality nestled among the hills of Aquilano is the Pasquale family, today represented by Enzo, who, with the support of his wife Lucia and their children Ottaviano and Antonia, produces wines of extraordinary depth. The Pasquale couple embarked on this adventure in 1988 with the aim of enhancing the qualities of Montepulciano and the territory of Prezza, home to the winery. The name of this municipality, located at the top of a rocky spur in the western area of the Valle Peligna, originates from the Latin verb “praeesse”, which means “to preside”, from which the noun “praesidium”, the name of the estate, is derived.

The focus of the Praesidium winery is on Montepulciano, the symbolic variety of Abruzzo winemaking, which, according to some scholars, originated right near Prezza, in the Aquilano hinterland. Much more recent is the introduction by the Pasquale family of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. The vineyards, managed in accordance with the principles of organic farming, with low grape yields and the exclusion of any synthetic chemical products, are distributed between the municipalities of Prezza and Raiano, at an altitude of about 400 meters above sea level. The soil is rich in clay and skeleton, with the concomitant presence of siliceous pebbles and limestone, while the winemaking process is of highly artisanal nature, based on spontaneous fermentations, exclusion of any additives or invasive manipulation, and low doses of added sulfites. As wine containers, both steel tanks and oak barrels are used, always with a well-considered use of wood.

The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva is the most representative wine of the Praesidium winery, a denomination interpreted through a sincere and traditional style, capable of impressing with its indomitable character. Also noteworthy is the quality of the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Superiore, a wine that, by its characteristics, is closer to a light red than to a rosé. In general, the labels produced by Praesidium are capable of highlighting the truest expression of Abruzzo’s winemaking, particularly that of the Valle Peligna territory.
