Ruth Lewandowski
The story of Ruth Lewandowski Wines is a tale of idealism and a return to the land, born from the vision of Evan Lewandowski who chose to merge the European agricultural soul with Californian vitality. The philosophy in the vineyard and winery respects Evan's personal philosophy, encapsulated in the name 'Ruth', which signifies the cycle of things, where what is alive today exists thanks to the vine and the passing of those who were born before. Here lies the goal of the winery: to express through wine the nature of things, both physically and in spirit.
The Ruth Lewandowski project takes shape between Hopland and Ukiah, on the hills of the "Talmage Bench" in Mendocino. The work began by recovering the ancient Fox Hill Vineyard, converted from a traditional planting to a mosaic of Italian and Mediterranean varieties. This first estate is complemented by other plots that enrich the productive landscape: Lost Hills Ranch, Gibson Ranch, and Cole Ranch, where Evan continues his experiments with varieties from all over the world. The production method fully embraces a handcrafted approach, based on the spontaneity of processes and minimal human intervention. human. Fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and based on the conditions of the grapes and the desired result, the winery uses targeted maturations for each parcel, whether in steel, cement, or neutral barrels.
The wines of Ruth Lewandowski seek drinkability, tension, and freshness, in search of an American voice to express grape varieties from around the world. Some Mediterranean varieties benefit from prolonged skin macerations to enhance structure and aromaticity, while the more delicate grapes are vinified with carbonic fermentations or co-fermentations, techniques that impart energy and lightness to the wines. No clarifications or invasive filtrations are practiced, and the use of sulfur is limited to the bare minimum. Everything is aimed at maintaining expressive transparency, the balance between the vitality of the fruit and the strength of the territory. Each wine signed by Ruth Lewandowski is the result of an agricultural thought that aims to return the poetry of the land.
