Sa Defenza

The Sa Defenza winery is located in Donori, in the province of Cagliari, where the Marchi brothers passionately and enthusiastically create a small artisanal production linked to this territory of southern Sardinia. Since Pietro, Paolo, and Anna Marchi took over the family farm, they have focused on quality viticulture that respects the environment, supported by their parents Silvana and Salvatore. Pietro and Paolo mainly manage the vineyards and winemaking, while Anna is involved in the administrative aspect. Although the estate's roots date back to the 1920s, the Marchi family has been dedicated to livestock breeding and agriculture for several generations. It was in 1999 that Salvatore's children began experimenting with the first vinifications, and after years of studies and attempts, Pietro, Paolo, and Anna launched the first labels, inaugurating the new winery in 2015. The name "Sa Defenza" comes from the homonymous locality and means "the defense," referring to the production vision of the Marchi family that aims to protect the well-being of the territory they cultivate.

The total hectares owned by the Sa Defenza estate are 40, of which 12 are dedicated to vine cultivation and the remaining part reserved for orchards, olive groves, and Mediterranean scrub, in a context rich in biodiversity. The cultivated varieties are traditional: Vermentino, Semidano, Nuragus, and Moscato among the white grapes, and Cannonau, Bovale, and Barbera Sarda for the black grape varieties. The only exception is the international Syrah, a variety that has shown excellent adaptation to the territory of Donori. The vineyards, located on hilly land rich in sand and granite, are cultivated according to a sustainable approach, with spontaneous cover crops and low yields per hectare. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, and the subsequent winemaking occurs in stainless steel tanks through spontaneous alcoholic fermentation, sometimes with temperature control. The wines are finally bottled without undergoing any filtration.

The selection of the Sa Defenza winery is focused on highly territorial wines, whether they are white, red, or macerated whites. In particular, tasting the estate's labels reveals the warm, savory, and Mediterranean character of the Donori area.
