Château Calon
Through its full, generous, and rich expressions, the French wine estate Chateau Calon has long enhanced the territory of Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion, located on the right bank of the Bordeaux river Dordogne. This small denomination, situated in the municipality of Montagne, at the northern border of the more well-known AOC of Saint-Emilion, is based like the latter on the Merlot grape, which alone represents about 75% of the total area reserved for vineyards. Together with the AOCs of Lussac-Saint-Emilion, Montagne-Saint-Emilion, and Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion, St-Georges-St-Emilion falls among the so-called "satellite denominations of Saint-Emilion." At the helm of the Chateau is Jean-Noel Boidron, a former professor at the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology and already the owner of another Bordeaux estate, Chateau Corbin Michotte. Jean-Noel inherited his passion for the wine world from his family, made up of Calon winemakers since 1855.
On the nearly 8 hectares of owned vineyards, the wine estate Chateau Calon cultivates the traditional grape varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, also known as Côt, and especially Merlot. The vines are planted in well-drained clay soils, rich in limestone rocks, while the climate is similar to that of Saint-Emilion, namely temperate oceanic with continental influences. The harvest is done entirely by hand and in the winery, alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, accompanied by prolonged maceration on the skins. Once the fermentation process is completed, the mass is aged in French oak barriques, with a varying percentage of new woods.
As per tradition for the Bordeaux area, the Château Calon winery produces a main wine that bears the name of the estate, in this case, the Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion Château Calon. It is a full-bodied, warm Bordeaux blend that is also appreciated for its intense fruity and spicy aromas, typical of the territory and the grape varieties at the base of the blend.
