Chatzigeorgiou

The Chatzigeorgiou estate is a historic and important winery in Limnos, an island located in the northern part of the Aegean Sea. The estate was founded in the early 1950s by Vassileios Chatzigeorgiou, with the idea of producing quality wines, faithful to the oldest traditions of the territory. Today the farm is managed by his son Nikolas Chatzigeorgiou, who has renewed the facilities and given a more modern face to the estate, also starting a process of transition towards organic farming, respectful of the wild and unspoiled environment of the island. A choice consistent with the desire to find a more authentic and direct relationship with the land and its fruits.

The Chatzigeorgiou estate covers a total of seven hectares and is located near Karpasi, a hilly area in the center of the island, overlooking a wide and deep inlet. The vineyards are cultivated at an altitude of about 150-200 meters above sea level with a sunny exposure facing south-east. The facilities date back to 1998 and the vines take root in highly suitable soils of volcanic nature, particularly rich in precious mineral elements. The climate of the island is Mediterranean, dry and hot, always refreshed by breezes and the Meltemi. The vineyard work is done manually, as is the harvest, which takes place at full ripeness of the grapes.

Among the rows of the vineyards of the Chatzigeorgiou estate, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are cultivated, but above all the Moscato d’Alessandria, the most representative grape of the area. This aromatic white grape variety is, in fact, present in all Mediterranean countries. A true iconic grape variety, representing a piece of the history of Hellenic wine, a true ambassador of Greek culture. Following the choice of careful viticulture, there is also a philosophy of the winery oriented towards a light and simple enology. All vinifications take place trying to accommodate the transformation of the must into wine with minimal human intervention, in order to enhance the primary aromas of the grapes and the characteristics of the extraordinary terroir of the Aegean Sea.
