Maillart Nicolas
In the heart of the Montagne de Reims, among the Premier and Grand Cru villages, lies the historic Maison Nicolas Maillart, one of the most fascinating and innovative realities in Champagne. The Maillart family has been cultivating vines in this area since 1753, but some documents suggest that the activity may date back to 1533. With the arrival in 2003 of Nicolas – a trained oenologist and engineer – the estate experienced a new momentum, while remaining faithful to its centuries-old vocation: to express the identity of the Champagne terroirs in every bottle. Today, now in its ninth generation, the company continues to stand out in the national and international landscape thanks to its constant pursuit of excellence, sustainable vision, and deep connection to the territory.
The 15 hectares of vineyard are located exclusively in the Montagne de Reims and are cultivated with great care in respect of the environment, having received HVE and Sustainable Viticulture certifications. The vines, mostly Pinot Noir (75%), are planted mainly on slopes, where they benefit from optimal exposures and dedicated soils. Completing the picture are Chardonnay and the rare Petit Meslier, successfully reintroduced by Nicolas Maillart to enrich the biodiversity of the varietal heritage. Each plot is vinified separately, in steel or wood, depending on the origin of the grapes, without malolactic fermentation, with minimal sulfites and prolonged aging. This extreme attention to every detail, from the vineyard to the bottle, allows for the production of wines of great precision, complexity, and identity.
Among the most fascinating curiosities of the estate stands a historic plot of Pinot Noir on its own roots, planted in 1973 by Nicolas's father on a sandy soil that had resisted phylloxera. From this unique vineyard comes a special champagne, produced only in exceptional vintages, which encapsulates the living memory of the past and the strength of the terroir. In addition to this rarity, the company offers a range of labels that faithfully reflect the characteristics of the individual villages and vintages, with cuvées that combine power, elegance, and depth. Nicolas Maillart thus confirms itself as one of the emerging voices of the new Champagne, capable of combining tradition and modernity with rare sensitivity.
