Quinta do Monte Xisto
Located in the magnificent viticultural context of the Douro, the wine estate Quinta do Monte Xisto is a protagonist of true expressions of the territory, created firmly following a genuine and traditional production philosophy. The winery is precisely located in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, on the left bank of the Douro River, in the subzone of Douro Superior, an area rich in schist rocks, from which the name of the Quinta derives. The founder and owner of the estate is João Rosas Nicolau de Almeida, a descendant of a long line of wine producers, who, after years of studies and contributions to the enology of the Douro, decided in 1993 to start purchasing land in Vila Nova de Foz Côa after falling in love with the territory. The early 2000s saw the planting of the first vineyards that officially marked the birth of the winery João Nicolau de Almeida & Filhos with Quinta do Monte Xisto, an estate that today João runs together with his wife Graça Eça de Queiroz Cabral and their children Mateus, João, and Mafalda.
Quinta do Monte Xisto covers 55 hectares, of which 10 are dedicated to to the vine and the remaining part reserved for juniper, holm oak, and terebinth woods, olive groves, almond trees, and small orange groves. The varietal platform is broad and entirely traditional, including the grape varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Sousão, Tinta Cão, Tinta da Barca, Tinta Francisca, and Roriz among the red grape varieties, and Rabigato, Arinto, Viosinho, and Côdega for the white grapes. The vines benefit from the schistose matrix of the soil, the Mediterranean-continental climate that characterizes the area, and altitudes ranging from 220 to 320 meters above sea level. The estate applies the principles of certified organic farming and biodynamics, also using infusions and plant preparations to stimulate the natural resistances of the plants. After manual harvesting, the bunches are immediately transferred to the winery where alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously, mostly in the traditional “lagar”, open and shallow granite tanks. For aging, stainless steel tanks, concrete tanks, or 600-liter wooden barrels are used.
or 600-liter wooden barrels. The production of Quinta do Monte Xisto aims to offer the most authentic expression of the territory, without manipulations or artifices, accommodating the specific characteristics of the terroir of Quinta do Monte Xisto.
