Taaibosch

Taaibosch is a family-run South African wine estate committed to enhancing the oenological expression of the Helderberg area, with its high hills, through a production approach that respects environmental health. Helderberg is located in the Stellenbosch region, precisely on the northeastern slope, less than 8 kilometers from False Bay. The origins of the estate date back to 1690, while in the mid-1990s, wine production began under the Cordoba brand, creator of the first Bordeaux blend predominantly Cabernet Franc in all of South Africa, which quickly became one of the most famous wines in the country. At the helm of the winery today is the Oddo family, who have reached the fifth generation of wine producers, and as soon as they took over the estate in 2016, they initiated the conversion to organic farming, later choosing the name Taaibosch for the project, derived from the local plant called “fijnbos”. The Oddo family has indeed dedicated themselves to the dissemination of local plant species instead of the foreign ones planted over the previous decades, with over half of the overall estate now reserved for the native flora.

Adopting the principles of organic farming, Taaibosch winery cultivates Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards benefit from the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, with its refreshing breezes, as well as the ancient origin of the soils, composed of layers of sandstone and schist resting on granite, also rich in mineral elements such as kaolinite, iron, and aluminum oxide, associated with the reddish color of the Helderberg soils. The altitudes vary from 250 to 380 meters above sea level while the exposure is predominantly west. After manual harvesting, the grapes are vinified by gravity through minimalist winemaking practices aimed at enhancing the unique expression of the Helderberg territory.

The only label produced by the Taaibosch estate is the ‘Crescendo’, a Bordeaux blend of exceptional balance and elegance, also endowed with remarkable tension and extraordinary longevity.
