Château Calon-Ségur
In Saint-Estèphe, on the left bank of Bordeaux, lies the prestigious winery Château Calon-Ségur, a winemaking gem of the Médoc. Founded in 1670, the Château was included among the Troisièmes Crus in the official classification of Bordeaux wines of 1855 requested by Napoleon III, who called for a classification system for the best wines of the region. It is one of the oldest cellars in Saint-Estèphe, as evidenced by the fact that for a long time the village was known as Saint-Estèphe de Calon. Since 2006, Vincent Millet has been managing the estate, holding a PhD in wine microbiology and several years of experience at another historic Bordeaux winery like Château Margaux. In 2012, Jean-Pierre Denis purchased the property from the Gasqueton family on behalf of the Crédits Mutuel Arkéa group, immediately starting an ambitious renewal process both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The symbol of Château Calon-Ségur is, since the 18th century, the heart, chosen to pay homage to the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, one of the most influential men in the Bordeaux wine world, who stated, “I produce wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.”
Château Calon-Ségur encompasses 55 hectares of enclosed vineyard, the same as when the Bordeaux wine classification was drawn up in 1855, dedicated to the traditional grape varieties of the left bank of the Gironde, namely Cabernet Sauvignon first and foremost, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are first destemmed, carefully selected, and then cooled through a refrigerated tunnel. Approximately 3 days of cold pre-fermentation maceration follow, with subsequent fermentations taking place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, accompanied by 18-21 days of skin maceration. For the aging phase, French oak barrels are used, first passage for the Saint-Estèphe Château Calon-Ségur and new for a third for the ‘Marquis de Calon.Ségur’. The entire process takes place in a modern environment with controlled temperature and humidity values, a fundamental factor to ensure a harmonious evolution of the wines.
From this prestigious tradition and meticulous production process, the labels of Château Calon-Ségur are born, led by the Saint-Estèphe Château Calon-Ségur, among the wine symbols of Saint-Estèphe.
