Château Climens
Chateau Climens is a historic and prestigious winery, probably the most important winemaking reality dedicated to the production of Barsac, a precious sweet botrytized wine from the Bordeaux area. The name Climens first appears in a document dated 1547, referring to the Roborel de Climens family, owners of the Château until 1802. From that year onwards, the property has passed into the hands of 6 other families: the Binaud, the Lacoste, the Gounouilhou, the Lurton, and more recently, the Bérénice Lurton, who in 2022 sold it to the Moitry family, who are the current owners. A peculiarity of Chateau Climens compared to other estates in the Barsac and Sauternes area is the fact that the wines of the winery are produced exclusively with Sémillon grapes, without the addition of Sauvignon Blanc, a variety often used to confer freshness. This is explained by the fact that the vineyards of Chateau Climens have a vocation such that the wine derives freshness from the minerality of the soil. Not surprisingly, due to its exceptional winemaking aptitude, Chateau Climens is nicknamed “Lord of Barsac.”
in a single body around the castle, planted on soils consisting of a thin layer of clay and iron sands defined as “the red sands of Barsac,” placed above a limestone subsoil. Fundamental for the estate is the characteristic microclimate of the area, with the alternation of morning fogs and sunny afternoons that favor the proper development of noble rot on the grapes. This rot, whose triggering agent is the fungus Botrytis cinerea, dehydrates the grapes concentrating sugars and aromas. In 2010, the estate successfully approached biodynamic agriculture, immediately finding greater well-being of the vines and consequently a higher quality in the wines. In the cellar, in addition to traditional oak barrels, steel tanks and concrete vats are also used, along with peculiar glass containers. The symbol of Chateau Climens is its Barsac 1er Cru Classé, a dessert wine that amazes for richness, complexity, breadth, and elegance, at the top quality worldwide in its category.
