Domaine du Bourgeais
The Domaine de Bourgeais is a production reality in the Loire Valley founded in 1975 within the municipality of Vertou, in the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine production area, a region that the Albert family intends to enhance revealing its multiple facets. In this perspective, the different plots are vinified individually and today it is Edith and Pierrick, along with their children Clément and Benoit, who manage the estate dedicating themselves personally to each phase of production. The Domaine is also certified as an independent producer, a certification intended for wineries that operate entirely independently.
The hectares available to Domaine de Bourgeais are 40, almost exclusively occupied by Melon de Bourgogne, the traditional white grape variety of the area, accompanied by small percentages of the black grape varieties Merlot and Gamay. The vines, cultivated following the principles of organic farming, reach up to over 70 years of age and are rooted in soils composed of a variable sandy matrix resting on a subsoil of ortogneiss and micaschist. After the harvest, the white grapes undergo a gentle pressing, followed by 12 hours of static decantation of the must. The fermentations take place at controlled temperature for a period of 2-3 weeks in stainless steel tanks, the same type of winemaking containers where the maturation process on the fine lees occurs, which can last from 4 up to as much as 20 months for the most prestigious and complex labels, such as Muscadet ‘La Haye Fouassière’.
The labels of Domaine de Bourgeais reveal some of the different expressions of Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, wine produced in the westernmost part of the Loire wine region, around Nantes. These are fresh and mineral expressions that faithfully evoke this oceanic territory of north-western France, to be paired with seafood cuisine to enhance the characteristics of these delightful white wines.
