Ego Bodegas
Ego Bodegas is a productive reality of southeastern Spain that, through an innovative yet respectful approach to tradition, produces red wines with a Mediterranean soul. The project was initiated in 2011 in Jumilla, within the autonomous community of Murcia, by the Spaniard Santos Ortiz along with his Romanian spouse Ioana Paunescu. The two, with little money but great talent in the enological and commercial fields, managed to succeed by founding their belief on three key factors: quality, image, and price. The starting location was chosen after months of careful research, at the end of which Santos and Ioana identified a beautiful farm in an area known as "the carpenter's house," surrounded by old vineyards and characterized by high altitudes and a stunning landscape. In order to ensure a clean progression of the fermentation processes, the winery is equipped with cutting-edge technologies, and the vision embraced by Santos and Ioana aims to combine traditional and modern methods.
The Ego Bodegas estate has 35 hectares of vineyards that benefit from the sunny and typically Mediterranean climate of the Jumilla area. Here, the soils present an abundance of sand and limestone, while the altitudes reach up to 900 meters above sea level in certain plots. Based on these territorial and climatic parameters, Santos and Ioana primarily cultivate the traditional Monastrell grape variety, alongside international varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Each grape variety is vinified separately in stainless steel tanks, with controlled temperature fermentation accompanied by 15-30 days of skin maceration. The subsequent aging phase takes place in French or American oak barrels for varying periods depending on the wine in question.
The range of labels developed by the Ego Bodegas winery is broad, based on red wines. These are bottles skilled in reinterpreting the character of Mediterranean wines in an international key, giving rise to full-bodied, mature, and enveloping reds.
