Express Winemakers

Express Winemakers is a beautiful Australian winemaking project born from the dream of Ryan O’Meara and Pete Ikstrums, first-generation winemakers intent on recovering and enhancing abandoned vineyards scattered throughout the Great Southern, a region of Western Australia characterized by a Mediterranean climate, ideal for vine cultivation. Before embarking on their adventure, Ryan and Pete collected a series of work experiences across Europe, California, and Australia, thus realizing their first personal winemaking in 2011 with small quantities of Riesling and Syrah from a local vineyard. Over the years, the worked plots have gradually increased, reaching the current number of six, distributed among the areas of Denmark, Mount Barker, and Porongurup.

Embracing the principles of organic farming, Ryan and Pete of Express Winemakers cultivate international grape varieties such as Pinot Nero, Shiraz, Malbec, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon. These grow on granitic soils, rich in sand, iron, and gravel depending on the reference plot, in areas characterized by a rather cool microclimate, an element that enhances the aromas and the gustatory dynamism of the wines. The goal of the two winemakers is to establish a physiological and productive balance in the plants, excluding the use of mineral fertilizers and synthetic chemical products. The same genuine approach is adopted in the cellar, where fermentations are entrusted solely to indigenous yeasts and the use of clarification and filtration operations is excluded. The types of winemaking containers used range from steel tanks to large oak barrels, passing through barriques, concrete vats, and peculiar ceramic vessels.

The wines signed by Express Winemakers stand out for their frank and direct identity, far from any winemaking conformism, reflecting the genuine style of winemakers Ryan O’Meara and Pete Ikstrums. A standout element is their fresh and juicy taste, with exceptional smoothness.
