Antico Castello

Combining tradition and modernity, the wine-making reality of Antico Castello interprets the territory of Irpinia by creating expressions of remarkable typicity. The estate was founded in 2006 by the Romano family in San Mango sul Calore, in the heart of Irpinia, where Franco and Fiorenza started this project with a purely wine-oriented vocation. Since 2009, their children Chiara and Francesco have been leading the estate, always supported by their parents, who hold degrees in Economics and Business Management and Civil Engineering, both also graduated as sommeliers. The name of the winery pays homage to an ancient feudal building present in the territory of San Mango sul Calore, unfortunately devastated by the earthquake of 1980.

The approximately 10 hectares of vineyards cultivated by Antico Castello are dedicated to the main varieties of Irpinia, namely Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina. The plants rest on clay and limestone soils, mainly exposed to the northwest and southeast, located at an altitude of 400-450 meters abovesea level. Furthermore, the nearby presence of the Calore river positively influences the vines by regulating humidity and temperature in the vineyards. The white grapes are processed through a gentle pressing using a membrane press and subsequent fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. On the other hand, Aglianico is vinified in red in steel with a long maceration on the skins, with the subsequent aging phase taking place in large oak barrels of 25 or 50 hectoliters.

The highlight of the production of the Antico Castello winery is the Taurasi, a famous Irpinian wine interpreted in the "classic" and Reserve versions, giving rise to structured, powerful, and long-lived expressions, characteristics typical of the denomination. Completing the range are the other territorial labels Irpinia Aglianico ‘Magis’, Falanghina ‘Demetra’, Fiano ‘Orfeo’, and Greco ‘Ermes’, an authentic reflection of Irpinia.
