Isabel Ferrando
Famille Isabel Ferrando is a biodynamic reality that ranks among the most important Domaine in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape area in qualitative terms, focused on the enhancement of the Mediterranean essence of the area. The winery is located at the Saint-Prefért estate, situated on the southern slope of the denomination, where Isabel Ferrando officially started her winemaking activity in 2004 with the support of her husband and today also of her daughter Guillemette. It was the birth of her daughter in 1997 that prompted the producer, then a bank manager, to completely change her life, dreaming from the very beginning of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape area as the place for her project. After a few years of studies at the enological school of Carpentras and numerous research efforts, in 2002 Isabel and her husband finally identified the estate of their dreams. Fundamental for Isabel was the influence of Henri Bonneau, an iconic producer from the Southern Rhône.
Côtes du Rhône. The cultivated varieties are those of tradition, namely Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Syrah for black grape varieties, Clairette and Roussanne among white grapes. The vineyards lie on soils rich in blue or red clays, gravel, and sand, characterized by the presence of round pebbles, typical of the area. The climate is warm and Mediterranean, very sunny, and strongly influenced by the presence of the Maestrale wind that brushes the vineyards. The winemaking process involves spontaneous fermentations, often with whole clusters, with the total exclusion of any invasive intervention or manipulation. There are numerous types of wine vessels adopted, such as concrete tanks, oak barrels, amphorae, stainless steel tanks, and peculiar spherical glass containers called “wineglobe”.
For a long time, following the Burgundian model, Isabel Ferrando dedicated herself to the separate vinification of the different cultivated parcels. However, in 2020, after 20 years of study and work, the winemaker finally embraced the tradition of the area by producing her first blended label:
