Pato Luis
In the heart of Bairrada, in Portugal, the name Luis Pato is synonymous with innovation and authenticity. The Pato family has been producing wine since the 18th century, at the famous Quinta do Ribeirinho, but the turning point comes in 1970, when João Pato becomes the first producer to bottle his own wines after the demarcation of the region. Luis is the heir to that pioneering spirit: in 1980 he creates the first single-varietal Baga, marking the beginning of a new era for Bairrada. Since then, Pato has been considered a revolutionary: in 1985 he introduces winemaking with destemmed grapes and aging in French oak, in 1988 he plants Baga on “own roots”, and in 1995 he launches the first single vineyard wines of Portugal, such as Vinha Pan, Vinha Barrosa, and Quinta do Ribeirinho Pé Franco.
The 60 hectares of vineyards at Luis Pato's winery host Baga and Touriga Nacional for reds, and Maria Gomes, Bical, Cercial da Bairrada, and Sercialinho for whites, cultivated on sandy or clay-limestone soils, suited for both wines of great finesse and great intensity. Luis Pato adopts, with his winery, a free and experimental approach, Luisleaves in 1999 the DOC to work under the Regional Beiras designation, exploring new techniques such as precision harvesting and collaborating with his daughter Filipa Pato on innovative projects.
Luis Pato produces great reds, often compared to great Nebbiolo-based wines, whites, but also other types that he has helped to import into Portugal. Among his most notable creations are the Abafado Molecular, or naturally sweet wines, and the single vineyard sparkling wines, the result of a constant search for the identity of the territory. The wines of Luis Pato are precise, pure, and vibrant, a reflection of a man who has managed to combine rigor and Latin creativity, transforming Bairrada into a laboratory of Portuguese oenological excellence.
