Poppelvej

Through an absolutely unconventional production style, the Australian wine reality Poppelvej produces artisanal wines with an eccentric character mainly from French varieties, but also from Italian and German ones. We are located in the McLaren Vale area, in South Australia, less than 50 kilometers south of the city of Adelaide, in a territory of great charm characterized by a Mediterranean climate ideal for viticulture. Here, the Dane Uffe Deichmann started his project in 2015 after working as a sommelier in Copenhagen, with the support of his brother Jens, who travels back and forth from Europe to Australia to help him in the vineyard and cellar. Regarding the curious name Poppelvej, it comes from the name of the Danish street where Uffe grew up, located in the city of Hundested.

The producer Uffe of Poppelvej makes his wines with grapes grown according to sustainable practices within vineyards scattered between the McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills areas, occupied by a wide and heterogeneous range of varieties, including Pinot Nero, Teroldego, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Greco, Pinot Meunier, Chenin Blanc, and Viognier. In the cellar, any winemaking sophistication is banned, with the crushing done by foot and fermentations occurring spontaneously thanks to the sole intervention of indigenous yeasts, often with whole clusters and prolonged macerations even for white grapes. The entire processing is conducted in a very artisanal manner, completely excluding the use of any additives and enological aids, except for very low doses of sulfur, added only when necessary. The wine containers used are various, from steel tanks to exhausted wooden barrels, including ceramic eggs and fiberglass tanks.

The production of Poppelvej encompasses highly varied expressions in style and type, united by an exceptional smoothness and liveliness, the result of Uffe's passion and desire to experiment. Whether they are reds, whites, orange, or bottle-fermented wines, the wines from the Poppelvej cellar manage to convey a feeling of joyful lightheartedness in the glass.
