Domaine des Crais
In Leynes, in the Mâconnais area, the family-run winery Domaine des Crais is a key player in faithful expressions of the southern Burgundy territory. At the helm of the Domaine is Benjamin Tissier, the fourth generation of winemakers in the family, who took over the estate in 2019 following his father Jean Luc Tissier. The foundation of the producer's philosophy is to combine modernity and tradition while fully respecting the ecosystem with its fragile balances. The estate's name derives from the plots of "Les Crais", located in the area of the Saint-Véran appellation, on the heights of the village of Leynes.
Domaine des Crais encompasses 6 hectares of vineyards located between Mâconnais and Beaujolais, dedicated to the traditional grape varieties Chardonnay and Gamay. The rows benefit from exposure to the south and southwest, as well as the presence of clay and limestone in the soils of Mâconnais and the granitic matrix of those in Beaujolais. The agronomic management embraced by the estate follows the principles of organic farming, integrated with biodynamic practices. Furthermore, new vineyard plantings are carried out through mass selection, and the Domaine also adopts practices such as agroforestry and the installation of beehives, aimed at promoting biodiversity. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, in order to preserve the integrity of the bunches, which are then vinified through spontaneous fermentations. For winemaking containers, the cellar uses stainless steel tanks, concrete vats, and small French oak barrels, either new or with several uses.
The selection from Domaine des Crais offers the most characteristic qualities of the wines from Mâconnais and Beaujolais, namely the great finesse of the former and the luscious juiciness of the latter. In particular, the Mâconnais range includes important AOCs such as Saint-Véran and Mâcon, while that of Beaujolais encompasses the Beaujolais-Villages and Juliénas denominations, interpretations of great typicity and pleasantness.
