Montecalvi

Located in the heart of Chianti Classico, the Montecalvi estate has its roots in the most authentic Tuscan history. Here, wine has been produced since 1400, when the property was part of the feudal estate of the Castello di Uzzano, which belonged first to Niccolò da Uzzano — a prominent figure of Medici Florence — and later to Count Castelbarco. For centuries, the cultivation of vineyards was regulated by the sharecropping system, which deeply connected the work of farmers to the land and the cycle of seasons. In the 1980s, Montecalvi became an independent estate, joining the Drake family, which has revitalized its historical and productive value. With a skillful balance between respect for tradition and innovation, the oldest vineyards have been restored — including one from 1932, among the oldest in Tuscany — and indigenous Italian varieties have been replanted. Today, Montecalvi is a certified organic company, faithful to a sustainable philosophy that looks to the future without forgetting its roots.

The 10 hectares of the estate extend over gentle hills at an altitude between 250 and 280 meters above sea level, where about 4 hectares are dedicated to the vine and half a hectare to the olive. The sandy-clay soils and the optimal exposures to the south, southeast, and southwest provide ideal conditions for the cultivation of Sangiovese and other local varieties. Every production phase is conducted with extreme care: the work in the vineyard, directed by Yahya El Harchaoui and vineyard consultant Marco Pierucci, favors manual interventions and targeted pruning, while in the cellar, manager Elena Renault and winemaker Stefano Chioccioli combine technical rigor with artisanal sensitivity. Fermentation occurs with full respect for the characteristics of the vintage and the grape, with minimal interventions and a wise use of wood, to preserve the territorial identity and natural balance of the wines.

Montecalvi's deliberately limited production reflects a tailored approach to wine: each label is created to express the unique personality of the vineyards overlooking the right bank of the Greve River. The Chianti Classico wines of the estate stand out for their elegance and depth, with a vibrant fruit profile and a strong territorial imprint. Next to the Sangiovese, there is also space for varieties such as Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malvasia, used in cuvées or in separate vinifications to explore the nuances of the terroir. All the wines, produced in limited quantities, tell the dedication and passion of a team that works in perfect harmony with nature. Montecalvi is thus the authentic expression of a modern, sustainable Chianti Classico that is deeply connected to its history.
