Peter Sichel

The Domaine Peter Sichel was founded over thirty years ago in the valley of Cucugnan, between the Eastern Pyrenees, a rugged and evocative territory nestled between the Corbières and the imposing Cathar citadels of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse. Peter Sichel, a true character of the 20th century between wine trade and espionage during the war, was fascinated by the potential of this land and its still intact identity. He decided to create an estate capable of telling the story of a place that was then little explored from a winemaking perspective. The Mediterranean but elevated climate, with Atlantic influences, and the wild beauty of the landscape have defined the soul of the project from the very beginning. In 2019, his grandson Alexander took over and initiated a profound reorganization of the vineyard, reducing the area and selecting the most suitable plots.

The Sichel Peter vineyard now extends over about 20 hectares distributed between 200 and 500 meters above sea level, fragmented into numerous plots on clay-limestone slopes and clay on Micraster marls, of sedimentary-marine origin. Since 2019, the management follows the principles of organic agriculture and biodynamic, choice that stems from the desire to preserve the natural balance of an unspoiled territory, through the use of natural preparations and work guided by the lunar calendar. In the cellar, fermentations occur with indigenous yeasts and the extractions are always delicate, based on brief infusions and controlled macerations. Cement, amphorae, and large barrels accompany the evolution of the wines without ever overpowering their identity.

The wines of Domaine Peter Sichel precisely reflect this respectful and measured approach, showing an expressiveness that arises from the freshness of the altitude and the slow ripening of the grapes. The whites, such as Roussanne, combine tension, depth, and substance, while the reds based on Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan express balance, tannic finesse, and a progressive flavor structure. They are readable wines, never forced, capable of telling the story of the garrigue and maquis that surround the vineyard and evolving naturally over time, always maintaining a strong territorial imprint.
