Terra 00
The Spanish winery Terra 00 operates in the name of sustainability and the spontaneity of the production process in Catalonia, within the wine-growing area of Terra Alta, at the southernmost tip of the region. The winemaking tradition in Terra Alta is millennia old and the bodega, located precisely in the municipality of Villalba de los Arcos, was established with the intention of recovering and enhancing this precious heritage by adopting the most sustainable and artisanal production approach possible. The founders of the winery are partners Joan R. Bada and Josep Arrufat, who describe their wines as “organic and human.”
Within the vineyards of the Terra 00 estate, the traditional varieties Vernatxa Blanca, Vernatxa Negra, Morenillo, and Macabeu are cultivated, grape varieties that benefit from the Mediterranean climate with continental tendencies that characterizes Terra Alta. Here, the soils show a presence of limestone, clay, rock, sand, and variable white silt depending on the reference parcel, while the agronomic management embraced by Joan and Josep follows the principles of organic farming, thus rejecting the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and chemical herbicides, integrated with biodynamic practices. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand in crates, and in the winery, the fermentations are entrusted to indigenous yeasts, associated with prolonged skin macerations even for white grapes. Almost exclusively 1,000-liter terracotta amphorae are used as containers for vinification and subsequent aging of about 9 months, with some labels also being processed in stainless steel tanks. The enological foundation of the winery is to intervene as little as possible and always with the utmost respect for the purest characteristics of the terroir. In this sense, the wines are never subjected to clarification or filtration processes and are bottled without added sulfites.
Terra 00 is the protagonist of a selection of artisanal wines that make expressive purity and pronounced minerality their salient features, whether they are deep oranges, tasty rosés, or enveloping red wines.
