Tenuta La Novella
Located within the territory of Greve in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico, Tenuta La Novella is the creator of a production that includes craft wines made at high altitude. The modern history of the estate began in 1996, when François Schneider took over the 14th-century monastery of San Bartolomeo in Musignana, which at the time was in a state of abandonment, restoring it to its former glory within 10 years. This monastery, which over its long history changed ownership among various noble families, took on the current name “La Novella” in 1827, and has always been dedicated to the production of high-quality wine and oil.
The estate of Tenuta La Novella extends over 188 hectares, of which just over 13 are reserved for viticulture, with the remaining part allocated to olive groves and woods. Alongside Sangiovese, the emblematic grape of Chianti, the winery cultivates Syrah, a famous black grape that in this territory yields surprising results, as well as small percentages of Canaiolo, Trebbiano, Malvasia, Moscato, and Viognier. The vineyards, managed under a biological and dynamic, certified respectively since 1998 and 2019, are distributed over 15 different plots, located in the best subzones of the estate. The vines rest on soils rich in clay, limestone, sandstone, and schist, depending on the reference plot, benefiting from the high altitudes, which range from 350 to 650 meters above sea level, and from the significant temperature excursions between day and night. The harvest is carried out strictly by hand in multiple passes and is followed by spontaneous fermentation initiated through pied de cuve, sometimes with a portion of whole clusters. For the aging phase, various sizes of oak barrels, cement tanks, steel containers, and stoneware amphorae are used.
The wines of Tenuta La Novella make freshness and aromatic fragrance their salient features, qualities that enhance the character of the starting grape varieties. They are modern yet genuine expressions of the territory of Greve in Chianti, characterized by formidable dynamism.
