Torraccia del Piantavigna
Torraccia del Piantavigna is a historical reality of Piedmontese wine, created in the post-war period by Pierino Piantavigna, who began his activity in viticulture with a small vineyard in the hilly area of Ghemme, beautifully exposed to the sun, near the castle of Cavenago. The winery officially came to life in 1997, thanks to the initiative of Alessandro Francoli, owner of the eponymous distillery. The headquarters is located in Ghemme, in one of the most beautiful areas of Alto Piemonte, on the hills at the foot of the Monte Rosa peak. The vineyards cover a total area of 40 hectares, within the famous denominations of Ghemme and Gattinara, which represent the two most prestigious excellences of the Colline della Sesia.
Today the estate is managed by adhering to the principles and values of its origins, respecting the traditions of the territory and the environment. In this area of northern Piemonte, the vine has dwelled since the time of the Celts and later the Romans, thanks to particularly favorable pedoclimatic conditions.favorable. The territory is of ancient volcanic origin. About 290 million years ago, there was an enormous volcanic complex active in this area, and the magmatic rocks were later brought to the surface during the compressions of the Earth's crust caused by the creation of the Alpine chain. If the Gattinara area retains this volcanic matrix in its soils, the Ghemme area is characterized mainly by morainic and alluvial deposits of pebbles and gravel from the Alpine arc. In both cases, these are very suitable lands for viticulture, particularly for Nebbiolo, the grape that has always been cultivated in the region.
The climate is cool and breezy, characterized by significant temperature variations due to the presence of cold air currents descending from the alpine peaks, contrasting with the hot and sunny days. Viticulture has always represented an important resource for the territory, and only the lure of a secure salary from the industrialization of the post-war period has generated a gradual abandonment of the countryside and vineyards. However, somevinegrowers, including Torraccia del Piantavigna, have managed to keep alive the ancient customs and enhance them through valuable work in protecting the vineyard landscape. The wines express the fresh and elegant character of mountain Nebbiolo, more rarefied and subtle, refined and delicate.
